Getting Started for Individuals
Let’s get started.
By the time most people reach out for help with their addiction, they have tried to quit the substance or behavior on their own, sometimes for years. The frustration that comes from falling short of their desire for the life they thought they were created to live can be crushing. Depression, hopelessness, and even thoughts of ending one’s own life are not uncommon. If you recognize any of these feelings – we have good news for you!
Shedding the crummy life that you have built for yourself and assuming the life that God has planned for you is obtainable. Even better yet, is that you don’t have to keep trying to do it alone. Going it alone has gotten you where you are right now. How’s that going? Right. We’ve been there too, and found a way out. There is a better life waiting for you if you can humble yourself enough to say one word….
Help.
Whether you found this book online, had it given to you by a concerned friend, or were lucky enough to be seeing a counselor with a Biblical worldview, somehow you got here. That’s great, and we want to help you live the life you’re supposed to be living--the life God designed for you.
Him & Them is designed to be very simple to start. With a book and a workbook, you are halfway there. Next, you need to get a Recovery Partner (RP). It’s best if you can find someone who has walked the path before you. There are millions of people that have worked their way through the 12 steps. You may already know one, or if not, your pastor almost certainly does. Just say “Help.” Ask to meet with them (usually weekly) and to go through the workbook together. As you look for this RP, pray that your Heavenly Father would bring the right person into your life.
If Him & Them meetings are already going on in your area, attend one – or several. If none have been started near you, perhaps you could ask your pastor if there is any appetite for helping folks with addiction in their church. It is vital that you spend time around others who have been through the same torture you have put yourself through, so if you can’t find a Him & Them group, go to an AA meeting (or NA, or SAA or whatever __A you need). Whatever works for you, a support group can be a life saver. Please don’t wait to find a perfect meeting to get started. All you need is the book, a workbook, and someone willing to partner with you through this season in your life.
To be clear, going to groups and meeting with your RP is not a replacement for going to church weekly. Your pastor or minister or priest has been called by God to feed a flock to which you belong. Their weekly message is a lifeline as you work toward a life in Christ. Him & Them is IN ADDITION to the weekly church services.
Welcome to the rest of your life. Honestly, God’s Word says it better than we can:
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord. “Plans to prosper you; plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11
